Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders

According to the Asian Pacific Institute, this term includes "all people of Asian, Asian American or Pacific Islander ancestry, who trace their origins to the countries, states, jurisdictions and/or the diasporic communities of these geographic regions.

AAPI

So often AAPI is faced with many prejudices and discrimination in the workplace. AAPI are usually described as "privileged" as within many workplaces they are the majority. Many are viewed as "naturally smart" as there is a history of Asians excelling within certain professions. Asian success in certain fields has granted the population the moniker of the "model minority".  Many of these terms discount the struggles many AAPI face and even the hard work they must put in to see said success. These terms also can cause issues for AAPI who do not fit the "naturally smart" stereotype and can't achieve success in similar aspects.

Many terms used to describe Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the workplace are:

  • Model minority

  • Glass/ bamboo ceiling

  • AAPI

  • Perpetual foreigners

  • Humble

  • Immigrant

  • Wealthy

  • Privileged

  • Smart

  • Tight lipped
